Periodontic Gum Disease Treatment
At Central Park Dental Spa, we stress an approach to the treatment of periodontal disease that emphasizes nutrition, tartar removal, appropriate antibiotic therapy and scheduled cleanings and assessment at fixed time intervals.
Every mouth contains healthy and harmful bacteria. When the harmful bacteria infects the gums and forms gaps around the teeth, known as pockets. These pockets can indicate gum disease. Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in the United States.
Gum Disease Symptoms
Are you experiencing any of the following?
1. Gums bleeding when you brush
2. Spots that get red or sore on your gums
3. Chronic bad breath
These could be the first sign of gum disease and only timely treatment from the dentist can help.
Treating Gum Disease
It is important to know that brushing and flossing will not cure the infection because it is under the gum line. Patients with gum disease will often require a special antibiotic to fight the disease. Arestin® is an effective powder antibiotic administered by the dentist inside the infected pockets. It stays in place fighting bacteria for up to 21 days after application and does not require removal.
Preventing Gum Disease
The key elements to prevention of gum disease are proper nutrition, proper home care (brushing and flossing) and regular check-ups and dental cleanings. Even though gum disease is the prime reason for loss of teeth and has been linked to heart disease, not everyone is motivated to care for their teeth and gums properly.
